The Curriculum for Years 1 to 4

Years 1 to 4 are the years of the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and the beginning of Key Stage 2.  In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 the subjects of the National Curriculum are:

  • Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Information Technology - called the Core Subjects.
  • Art and Design, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education - called the Foundation subjects.

Our curriculum also promotes the children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and children must study Religious Education (RE) unless their parents wish them to be withdrawn.

A large proportion of the curriculum is delivered through a 2 year rolling programme of cross-curricular topics. We adopt a project approach, enabling the children to have a more holistic and cohesive understanding of what they are learning.  The foundation subjects and RE, together with personal and health education (PSHE) and Citizenship, are plotted into the programme of topics and all necessary areas of the subjects are covered in the 2 year programme.  ICT is also integrated across all subject areas.

Numeracy and some aspects of Literacy are taught separately in lessons outside the cross-curricular topics.

Our curriculum framework sets out how the topics are used to meet the requirements of each National Curriculum subject.
